Youlbury is one of a number of National Scout Activity Centres owned by the Scout Association and the Centre covers an area of 42 acres. It was the first permanent centre opened by the Association having previously been used by local scouts since 1913.

The works form part of an eco-friendly sewage waste management system at the North End of the site to cater for the residential facilities including dormitories and kitchens serving up to 100 personnel.

The works comprised the following principal elements:

  • general arboreal work
  • demolition and clearance of existing septic tanks
  • supply, install and commission package sewage treatment works including mechanical, electrical works and associated drains and ducts
  • formation of outlet pond including provision of reeds, bullrushes and marginal planting
  • construction of disabled access paths, viewing and study areas

The scheme had to blend in with the existing environment which consisted of managed woodland, open lawned areas and activity apparatus and was required to be executed in as environmentally friendly manner as possible in accordance with the Scouting ethos.

The scheme was completed during an 8 week period in the spring of 2009.
