The lakes and ponds had been suffering silt build up for a number of years resulting unsightly summer algae growth and boating difficulties in the shallow water. Our job was to remove 0.5m silt all over. We were assisted by Staggs of Truro in locating farm land which would benefit from the high nutrient content of the silt and in successfully applying to The Environment Agency for permission to improve the land under Paragraph 7 of Environmental Permitting Regulations 2007.
The contract was carried out over a two month period January – March 2009 and went extremely well apart from the likelihood of a Low Ground Pressure Bulldozer sinking into the underlying peaty bed of the lakes and ponds. This necessitated a change of plant to the 1200mm wide tracked excavators and occasional jetting shown in our portfolio. The long reach excavator and bulk wagon operation worked very well although we suffered due to high inflow of stream water and slow outflows to the tidal River Gannel.
The people of Newquay were very understanding about the occasional silt splashing of their passing cars and the help given by Restormel Borough Council, Environment Agency and Cornwall County Council throughout the contract was much appreciated.
