Mochdre Weir was built in the 19th century to provide water for turning a local water mill. The mill was converted to a house in the 20th century leaving the 2.4m high weir in position and effectively preventing salmon and trout spawning upstream.
This was remedied by us on behalf of the Environment Agency in September 2007 with the removal of the weir, local re-grading and the provision of experimental swing gates upstream and downstream to allow animals to pass from one side of the brook to the other.
A beautiful location with buzzards in the trees above, crayfish in the brook below and we were even able to reuse the broken concrete to improve a Powys County Council bridleway alongside.
